True Nourishment Tips for Moms, Kids, & Pregnancy with Anne Honeman – Episode 19

by | Dec 15, 2021 | Podcast

Friends, today’s episode is chock-full of goodness! I’m excited to dive back into practical health chats with my friend Anne Honeman. She’s got quite the childhood story that I can’t wait for you to hear. Anne is passionate about children’s nutrition and helping parents nourish their families, and I know you’re going to leave with some ideas you can implement right away!

Anne is wife to a farmer, a beginner homesteader and mama to 3 kids ages 6, 3, and 7 months. After fighting a severe allergy for years and traditional medicine taking its toll on her, she eventually came upon her first holistic doctor. This doctor gave her a second lease on life at 20 years old, helping her to rebalance and heal her body. This journey sparked a fire in her for everything crunchy and holistic. Anne went on to become a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner to pursue her interest in nutrition and holistic healing. Anne is also the owner and founder of Plain to Peak Wellness: “keeping souls well from the plains to the peaks.”

Today Anne & I are talking all things nutrition surrounding pregnancy, mom-life, and kids. Be sure to listen to the end for lots of nutrient-dense kid snack ideas and picky eater tips! I can’t wait to hear your takeaways.

Things to Remember

1) True nutrition has to be nourishing to you physically and soulfully. Anne shared a helpful viewpoint that many of us may not often consider. Nutrition shares a deep connection with the earth, and even a DNA connection with the foods of our ancestors. What types of foods might be part of your story that help you feel nourished on many levels?

2) Postpartum rest as nourishment is just as important as food. If you’ve been around for any length of time, you know I will throw you all the praise hands for this one! Anne gave a wonderful reminder and personal story about the importance of soaking in all that a baby is and not feeling guilty for it. Postpartum moms, we have to listen to our bodies and rest! (This is a big part of my story as well, and you can hear the whole version here.)

3) If your body doesn’t get nutrients from what you’re eating, it will literally take it from itself. Your body needs nutrients to grow a human. American women come out of pregnancy completely depleted nutritionally. Anne offered such helpful wisdom on how to wholly nourish yourself during pregnancy. I especially loved the mindset shifts she shared in this part of our conversation.

4) Offer one thing you know your child will eat at each meal. Anne was full of practical tips for feeding kiddos! The truth is, our kids won’t be able to digest their food well if they’re stressed or in a fight. While it’s good to encourage them to try foods and eat what is offered, focus on keeping that parasympathetic state on the table too. Relaxed calm kids = well-digested food!

5) The world is not going to end if you take a break. Can I get an amen? Even with the best meals on the table or nutritional approaches for our family, we moms are still humans. Let’s not get so legalistic in our approach that we forget to extend grace to ourselves.

The Wellness Wrap-Up

A new rhythm, perspective, or change you’ve made in your life to achieve a life that’s more wholly well.

Anne’s answer centered around homesteading and growing her own food. (You’ll love the gift she asked for from her family for Mother’s Day, by the way!) Homesteading has helped ground herself back into the full human body experience-  emotional, physical, and spiritual. She shares, “Homesteading has brought me back to the basics and given me time to nourish myself with food yes, but also mentally and spiritually as well.” As she reminds us, we are not single dimensional beings! Love that!
