This is a great time to focus on boosting both you and your family’s immune system, especially by focusing on a nutrient dense, whole foods diet.

But how can it help with a cold? According to Dr. Ahn, a number of studies have shown that zinc has been shown to help decrease the duration of a person’s cold. So in other words, if you take zinc at the first sign of a cold, you shouldn’t be sick as long as you otherwise would. And in general, it can help boost your immune response, which helps people fight off colds in the first place. If you come down with a cold, the recommendation is taking zinc every one to three hours for three to 14 days.
Oscillococcinum was formulated using an active ingredient that’s extracted from the heart and liver of a certain kind of duck and has been diluted several times. The preparation is believed to contain specific compounds that can help fight symptoms of the flu.

Unlike some natural, immune boosting supplements, Elderberry Syrup is kid-friendly! It contains raw, local honey and goes down with ease.
It lasts at least a couple of months in the fridge, so it’s good to have a jar on hand for when illness hits! It can also be taken to help prevent illness.
What do scientific studies show?
In one study, elderberry extract inhibited several strains of influenza and reduced symptoms. Another study found that elderberry syrup flavonoids were effective against the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus.
In the most compelling study, a randomized trial of 60 patients aged 18-54 suffering from flu symptoms for 48 hours or less received 15 ml (3 teaspoons) of elderberry syrup or a placebo 4x per day for five days. Researchers observed that “Symptoms were relieved on average 4 days earlier and the use of rescue medication was significantly less in those receiving elderberry extract compared with placebo”.

A single teaspoon of homemade elderberry syrup once or twice a day is sufficient as a preventative measure. If illness strikes, use more as necessary, with up to 3 teaspoons, 4x per day as used in the randomized study described above.
