Building Muscle, Losing Fat, & Realistic Health Goals with Jordan Lips – Episode 26

Note: Today’s episode does have some language in it! I wanted you to be aware in case you’re listening around kids.

Welcome back to the Wholly Well Podcast! I’m SO glad you’re tuning in for today’s episode!

My guest this week is Jordan Lips, a health coach and personal trainer. This episode is a whole lot of fun, as we are chatting about some things like specific weight-lifting and realistic health goals that we haven’t talked about on this podcast before!

Jason got started in this industry after graduating college when he pushed his LSATs back and started training at a local gym. He found out right away it was made for him, and he got certified as a personal trainer shortly thereafter. After growing a thriving in-person business, he transitioned to more virtual work so he could reach even more clients seeking growth and life change. He is an inspirational coach that you’re going to love!

In today’s episode, we talk about being empowered to make choices that benefit your individual needs and not just subscribing to whatever culture is telling us is the next big health trend. We also dive into specific health goals, like what to do if you want to gain muscle, lose fat, how hormones and weight loss are intertwined, and much more.

Grab a cup of coffee (with collagen and cream, of course) and listen in. It’s a light-hearted easy listen and I think you’ll leave inspired and empowered!

Things to Remember

1) Self awareness is one of the most important yet underrated habits in the fitness journey. Like Jason says, it’s valuable to consistently take stock of what you’re doing & assess if it’s working for you— it’s not sustainable to want something you actually cannot (or don’t want to) acquire. There is no shame in deciding your goal is different from what you originally thought it would be! We don’t all want a six pack, or need a six pack, or decide the sacrifice is worth it. 👏 I thought this was SUCH a good point.

2) How do you make the switch to better workouts, not MORE workouts? Jordan talks about how modern women are marketed more Cardio & HIIT than strength and it’s hard for some women to walk away from HIIT and high cardio workouts to reach their goals. I know strength-training has been highly influential in my health goals. We need to normalize this!

3) We are addicted to the feeling of exhaustion… but sometimes it’s more about accomplishing a SPECIFIC goal rather than just go-go-going so that we “feel” tired but really accomplish nothing. (I think there is a life lesson here, too!) Can you relate?

4) Just start somewhere. When starting on a health journey, this was Jason’s best advice. We have to START somewhere and make adjustments based on our bio-individuality and genetics. There is no perfect amount of calories or protein/carb/fat macro ratio! Getting caught in the weeds of all the details does nothing but paralyze us. Stop obsessing and just start.

5) Hormones and calories are deeply related. Our bodies are always burning & storing calories. For fat loss to occur, we know it’s important to monitor intake and output. However, calories are so intertwined with hormones: We know reduced thyroid function does affect the rate at which we burn calories. If you’re stuck in your weight journey, hormones are an important factor to consider! (Subtle hint for my free happier hormones guide. 🙂)

The Wellness Wrap-Up

A new rhythm, perspective, or change you’ve made in your life to achieve a life that’s more wholly well.

Jason’s focus has been SUNSHINE. He didn’t realize, after moving from New Jersey to Texas, how meaningful spending more minutes in the sun would be for his mental health. Frequent sunlight exposure is SO powerful, and you KNOW I co-sign this!
