This month on instagram I’m focusing on all things minerals and why both micro and macro-minerals are so vital to our health on many levels.
We talk a LOT about consuming proteins, carbs, and fats, but we can’t leave our mineral friends out of this conversation! Minerals are a HUGE deal… often referred to as the “spark plugs for life!”
Unfortunately our modern day lifestyle alongside the constant stress we are under depletes minerals quickly. Before we get into consuming them, here’s a few reasons we WANT and NEED them in our bodies!
- Minerals facilitate the transfer of nutrients across cell membranes
- Minerals compose about 4% of our body
- We don’t produce minerals on our own, we must obtain them through our food and water
MINERALS are largely responsible for fueling the metabolism. Minerals are the spark plugs and turn on multiple enzymatic reactions in the body.
So, how to balance minerals? Nutrition, of course!
* beef liver and bone marrow (aka nose-to-tail eating)
* coconut water
* aloe vera ( SO MUCH POTASSIUM)
* bone broth
* oysters (if you can, I am allergic to shellfish, womppp)
* raw dairy
*fruit
Minerals activate enzymes that kick off essential reactions in the body. When we don’t have adequate levels of certain minerals, certain reactions will become compromised. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Adrenal stress and minerals go hand in hand: stress depletes minerals. Eventually, this depletion of sodium and magnesium makes it harder for our adrenals to respond to stress. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Blood sugar imbalance & adrenal insufficiency: Balancing calcium and magnesium is needed for insulin to be released appropriately. Without this, we can’t get off the blood sugar rollercoaster, dipping too high or too low—remember the body thrives with BALANCE. When blood sugar gets too low, it tends to lead to more stress hormone production, namely cortisol. We need enough potassium to help sugar get inside the cells which can help balance blood sugar. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thyroid: The thyroid hormone needs help to get inside the cell, potassium is needed for proper thyroid function across the board. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Energy : we need magnesium to make ATP, the body’s main source of energy ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Low Stomach Acid & Stress: excess stress wreaks havoc on our stomach acid production and makes it difficult to properly break down the foods we eat this is when parasites can become an issue. We need sodium to counteract this stress response, stress depletes both sodium and magnesium.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The bigger question becomes: “are you equipping + nourishing your body to mitigate the nutrient + mineral deficiencies stress creates?”
One simple but powerful way to support our bodies, especially in the fall, is to use quality supplements that target deficiencies we may have from food quality, soil depletion, and simply boost our immunes system as well.
I think by now you realize minerals are a HUGE deal and guess what, our modern day lifestyle coupled with constant stress DEPLETES these babies FAST!
Check out three of my favorites: below👇🏼
1️⃣ Master Mineral Drink by @mitigatestress
Magnesium Bicarbonate is the type of magnesium we would have been exposed to in nature and our water before our modern water was nearly undrinkable and lacking quality minerals. As magnesium levels increase, less insulin is needed to shuttle glucose into the cells, leading to improved insulin sensitivity.
2️⃣ Beef Liver by Heart and Soil Not many foods are worthy of the title “superfood.” However, liver is one of them. Once a popular and treasured food source, liver has fallen out of favor. This is unfortunate because liver is a nutritional powerhouse. It’s rich in protein and packed with essential vitamins and minerals!
3️⃣ Shilajat by @mitolife
This turns on enzymes, improves nervous system function, boosts immunity and increases energy production. 👏🏼
Tell me…do you need to up the minerals in your daily nutrition?! (P.S.: all the foods listed above are THE true superfoods, pass on the kale and opt for liver, thank me later!)
